Citrine

One of the more commonly known birthstones of November, Citrine is the beautiful yellow-orange variety of quartz. This puts it in the same mineral family as Amethyst. The color of Citrine can range from a pale yellow to a dark orange-brown; the darker it is, the more valuable the stone. Its coloration makes it a lovely affordable alternative to precious topaz and fancy colored sapphires.

Quartz only rarely occurs in shades of yellow in nature; gem-quality Amethysts are more common than their golden cousins. The gemstone has been valued by many cultures for thousands of years, can can be found throughout the world. Most commercial Citrine, however, comes from Brazil.

The word Citrine comes from the Latin word for lemon trees - citrus.
