Ruby

Rubies are the red form of the mineral corundum, and come in a range of colors from a light pinkish red to a deep crimson known as “pigeon’s blood.” Historically, most rubies came from Burma, but in recent years many rubies have also come from other parts of Asia, Africa, and Australia. Corundum is a very hard mineral, second only to diamond among gemstones.

The word ruby comes from the latin word ruber meaning red.

Along with diamonds, emeralds, and sapphires, rubies are considered precious stones. Ruby is the birthstone for July.
